I’m a potter in Calgary, Alberta who’s been making work for 2/3 of my life. Currently I work in mid fire stoneware, using clay from Medicine Hat.
What draws me to pottery as a maker is probably the same thing that draws those who take pieces home with them: a sense of personal connection. When I make pots, it’s my wish that folks who use them experience some form of comfort or uplift, whether it’s via a serving bowl that features in family dinners, or the off-colour humour of a swear word mug.
While I don’t think I’m out here changing anyone’s life, I’ve had lots of folks tell me I’ve left a positive mark on them by making things they love. People come to me for romantic gifts for partners, the perfect new thing for a new house, or that perfect gift for themselves.
While some potters specialize in super specific tools, I prefer making things that can be multipurpose so that you can decide how they best fit your life and home.
